You will also have free time at Plitvice Lakes to look around on your own. The Plitvice Lakes National Park is the oldest, largest, and most visited national park in Croatia. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site, too. The national park covers an area of 300 square kilometers, and the lakes actually cover only about 1% of the total area! There are 16 named lakes, which cascade one into the other and which are divided into the Upper and the Lower Lakes. They are connected by waterfalls, which will leave you in awe! The uniqueness of Plitvice Lakes lies in the formation of tufa barriers, which form lakes. Tufa is formed by the precipitation of calcium carbonate onto organic foundations like moss, algae, and bacteria. It is believed that the Plitvice Lakes system was formed 12,000 to 15,000 years ago! The area has a rich biodiversity, including the critically endangered Eurasian lynx. You will learn a lot more from our guide!
